In June 2023, the City of Tshwane, in partnership with the Department of Water and Sanitation, announced a R4 billion project aimed at enhancing the water supply in Hammanskraal. The initiative focuses on upgrading the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Plant, which has been a significant source of water contamination in the area. The city committed R450 million over three financial years, acknowledging the need for additional external funding to complete the project. Mayor Cilliers Brink emphasized the urgency of addressing long-standing water quality issues affecting thousands of households reliant on water tankers.
